Seasonal Items

keychain bottle opener - $6

Those who’ve seen my Etsy shop or my booths at craft shows will likely know that I have a crazy eclectic mix of designs for all my jewelry and housewares – I just love to offer my potential shoppers a large range of fun possibilities!

However, I have recently noticed that its also good to have seasonal items too, as often those surfing the net or shopping around will want to find something that may make the perfect accessory to their Fall wardrobe, or perhaps a great display to use for a holiday party, for examples.

portable purse hook - $20

Therefore, for the oncoming Autumn season, I tried to find paper patterns that were rich in Harvest colors – crimson reds, burnt oranges, golden yellows, etc. much like the colors of the gorgeous New England autumn foliage!

However, it is not only important to have items that are rich harvest colors..but it is also good to be mindful of each month’s birthstone colors too.  I learned this last month, as in August, I saw several of the Etsy.com homepages treasuries that said “shades of Peridot” which is August’s birthstone…and most items were NOT just jewelry using the actual birthstone, but various clothing, paintings, toys, etc. that were just that shade of green.  So for September, for example, it is important to keep in mind items that are shades of Sapphire blue too. They even have a Etsy Gift Guide devoted to “Shades of Sapphire

Summer Sales!

The summer months are great because of the warmer weather, no school, etc. but it is also known in the retail world to be some of the slowest months of the year in terms of sales … however what I’ve noticed is that some shops will offer great discounts and promotions in order to help stir up the lazy hazy days of summer and try to generate more sales, which definitely drew me in to take advantage of some of these great offers!

Here are some of my latest finds!  I cant wait for them to arrive in the mail soon!  🙂

One way to offer a sale is to “Discount” your items. . .  For those who’ve visited Boston’s Quincy Market, you’re likely to find one of those outdoor vendors selling these cool pieces of fabric that can be worn in a bunch of different ways! I’ve been wanting one for a long time, and then I found this fun dress by MyBaju that can be worn in  4 different ways!    These were originally $50, but now are $38!

Another way to have a sale is to have a “Clearance” section in your shop. . . I’ve been looking for  a handy simple bag to store all my knickknacks that I always need to transfer from purse to purse.  This little pouch by OregonMaid seems like the perfect item to hold my mints, pens, keys, eye drops, pocket mirror, purse hook, etc. as I switch from using last night’s evening purse to my work purse the next morning!

Another great promotion I like to offer is to have “Free Shipping” for your items!   I’d love to offer a special deal just for my blog followers!  After shopping at MaJenta Designs, during Checkout, simply type “Blog special – Free shipping” in the “message to seller”, then complete your payment as normal.  Afterwards, I will contact you directly to refund the shipping charges.  Offer is good through Labor Day (September 7, 2009)

* ONE DAY SALE (August 18, 2009) *

New Etsy Shop Banner

by Jennifer Tang of “MaJenta Designs”

I’m so excited to have finally updated my Etsy shop banner to include images of my actual items for sale in the shop!  I often read in Etsy forums how important it is to have an eye-catching banner, since it is the first thing potential buyers see, and often its your banner and avatar that first draws people in!

Etsy Banner - with pendants

Thanks to “BlissbyHeather” blog for their helpful tutorial, it was very easy to make my new banner!  You dont even need Photoshop, I just used the free program, “Gimp,” instead!  Here is the step-by-step instructions all copy/pasted for those who want instant gratification:

1) On the GIMP toolbar, click on “File” then “New”
2) a box will pop up that says “Create New Image”
3) In the box beside “Width”, type in the numbers “760”
4) In the box beside “Height”, type in the numbers “100”, click on the box that says “OK”
5) A rectangular shaped box will pop up. This is your banner.
6) If you want to add text to your banner, go back to the GIMP toolbar and click on the icon that looks like a capital letter “T”.
7) If you look at the bottom half of the toolbar you can see that there are options to adjust the size of your font, the style of letters etc.
8) Click on your banner where you want the text to show up. Start typing!
9) To add other pictures to your banner, you can go to the GIMP toolbar and click “File”, “Open” and browse through the files on your computer to find pictures that you have already saved. I found that in order to get a product to fit onto my banner I had to shrink the size of the picture first. I did this through an online site: http://www.resize2mail.com/ . I chose “shrink the photo by 75%” and then for some photos, I had to go back and do “shrink the photo by 25%”. This was how I added the purse and wallet pictures to my banner.
10)After the photos were resized and saved, I went to “File”, “Open” and found where I’d saved them. Then in order to add them to my banner, I went to the GIMP toolbar and clicked on the icon in the top left hand corner (it looks like a grey rectangle). I used this to select the areas of the resized photo that I wanted to use on my banner, and then I copied it and pasted it on my banner. (To copy, click on the piece that you want to copy, and hit the control button and the letter C on your keyboard. To paste, click on the banner where you want the item to be, and hit the control button and the letter V on your keyboard). If you want to move the picture that you just pasted on your banner, click on it and moved it.
11) To save my banner, I chose “File”, “Save As”. A grey box that says “Save Image” will pop up. Click on the cross icon beside “Save File Type by Extension”. A white box will show up at the bottom, scroll down and choose “JPEG image” and then click on the “Save” bottom in the bottom right hand corner.
12) A grey box that says “Export file” will pop up. Click on the “Export” box.
13) A grey box that says “Save as JPEG” will pop up. You will want to move the bar to the right, so that it says 100 in the white box and click “OK”.
14) You’re finished!
15) To upload your new banner, sign into your etsy account, click on “Your Etsy”, in the left hand colum under “Shop Setup”, click on “Appearance”. Under the heading “Banner” you can click on the “Browse” button and find where you saved your banner. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Save Changes”. That’s it 🙂

New Product Line – Foldable, Portable Purse Hangers!

by Jennifer Tang of  MaJenta Designs

TIRED of going to a restaurant or bar and having your purse taking up half your seat? or risk being knocked off the back of your chair? or worse yet – sitting on the dirty floor?! Then you’ll really love my new product line of Foldable, Portable Purse Hooks!

I was so excited to put these to use when I went for a night out on the town, and I can attest that they really do wonders!  After a long day at work, my friends wanted to hit up a bar, but the only table left was a tall standing table.  Well, its never fun to be standing around, with your stuffy coat on, and heavy purse wedged into your arm pit and weighing down your shoulder.

Then I realized that I had a handy dandy “Foldable, Portable Purse hook” inside my purse, and viola!  I was able to hang my very heavy purse (with a heavy academic textbook inside) AS WELL AS my coat too!  Heart Hanger

I’m so excited to have these products available at MaJenta Designs Etsy shop as well as soon to be available at my upcoming shows! These convenient little hangers will make their debut at the:
